Blanqueamiento dental: qué aclara de verdad y qué daña el esmalteTeeth whitening: what really lightens and what damages enamel

Whitening does not paint the tooth: a peroxide gel penetrates the enamel and oxidises the molecules that give colour to the dentine. That is why it works on stains within the tooth itself and not on composites, crowns or veneers, which do not change colour.
What can be lightened
- Yellowing that comes with age.
- Pigmentation from coffee, tea, mate, wine or tobacco.
- Mild staining from fluorosis.
What does not respond to whitening
- Tetracycline staining, which usually requires veneers.
- Teeth darkened by root canal treatment: they need internal whitening.
- Composite or porcelain restorations, which have to be replaced to match the shade.
Why it is done in the clinic
The concentration of clinical gel is far higher than any over-the-counter product, which is why the gum has to be isolated before applying it. The session is monitored in real time: if sensitivity appears, contact time is adjusted or a desensitiser is applied.

Sensitivity is expected
For 24 to 48 hours the tooth may react to cold. It is reversible and does not imply enamel damage when the procedure is properly indicated and supervised.
What to avoid
Abrasive daily pastes, baking soda, lemon, activated charcoal and kits without professional supervision wear enamel away permanently. Enamel does not regenerate: what is lost does not come back.
How long it lasts
Between one and three years, depending on diet and habits. With occasional at-home touch-ups prescribed by the dentist, the result holds without repeating the full session.
